West Point logoDuty, Honor, Country. Three words which represent a tradition of uncompromising excellence in leadership development unmatched anywhere in the world.

A few years ago, the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point marked the culmination of a hugely successful six-year capital campaign conducted by the Academy’s alumni organization, the Association of Graduates (AOG). The Bicentennial Campaign, celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the Military Academy, was the first-ever comprehensive fund raising campaign in the school’s illustrious history. And in keeping with the Academy’s time-honored commitment to victory with honor in all endeavors, the Bicentennial Campaign quickly surpassed its original $150 million goal and raised an astounding $218 million.

The AOG gathered USMA brass and distinguished alumni from all parts of the United States for an interactive series of presentations and group discussions facilitated by the GSI executive team in collaboration with the AOG’s senior staff. Topics ranged from the “Art and Science of Major Gift Fund Raising” to prospect identification, evaluation and strategy, to the role of research in formulating effective solicitation strategies, to making the ask and closing the gift.

Participants included several retired Generals and Colonels who came to the Leadership Forum eager to learn about a different kind of battle waged on the campaign trail where the rules of engagement are built upon having high sights, asking with confidence and closing with conviction! The Forum was videotaped for use with subsequent volunteer training and comprehensive manuals featuring a wide variety of resource information that were assembled and made available for volunteer reference throughout the campaign.

When the Bicentennial Campaign closed at year-end 2002, the AOG’s diligent campaign planning and highly strategic execution delivered the results. The numbers tell the story: a total of $218 million raised!

Congratulations from all at GSI to the Academy, to the AOG, to the many campaign leaders and donors, and to the long gray line.
